“Echoes” from the ocean: A mystery that has baffled scientists for nearly three decades.

Nearly three decades have passed, yet the mystery of this unusual sound continues to intrigue scientists .

In the North Pacific, there lives a whale. Of course, there are countless whales in that vast ocean. But this whale is very different. It is a male, either a blue whale or a fin whale. No one can be sure, because no one has ever seen it. Mysterious and invisible, this whale is famous worldwide for being the loneliest whale on the planet.

December 7, 1992: Exactly one year after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, marking the end of the US-Soviet Cold War. The Whidbey Island Naval Air Station (USA) remains. The Pacific Ocean is still the same – a vast and boundless sea, extending beyond the runway named after William Ault – a pilot who died in the Battle of the Coral Sea during World War II, whose body was never found – proving one thing: the ocean “swallows” humanity and makes them immortal beneath its deep waters.

But in those final days of 1992, at that same naval air station, something tangible appeared in the Pacific: a strange sound. It had an unusual frequency of 52 Hz .

The sound emanates from a creature moving through the Pacific Ocean. It is “singing” a solitary, high-pitched song.

Analyzing spectral images of this mysterious creature, American oceanographers predicted it was a giant blue whale (30 meters long, weighing about 180 tons), emitting a frequency that no other whale could hear. They named it 52 Blue (or 52 Hertz Whale).

To humans, 52 Hz is a low sound —like the lowest note on a tuba— but it’s high for whales. Whales typically “sing” to navigate, find food, communicate, and locate mates. Their songs can be heard by other whales thousands of miles away. As long as they share the same frequency, blue whales emit frequencies between 10 and 39 Hz, while fin whales are at 20 Hz (equivalent to the lowest notes on a piano).

The song was sung at a frequency no whale could hear. It was strangely high-pitched. And unusually solitary.

No one is sure why 52 Blue sings at this unusual frequency. Some biologists hypothesize that the whale may have some kind of deformity or be a hybrid of two whale species.

Since none of its kind could hear its calls, scientists decided to listen to 52 Blue more. Although it may have been alone in the ocean, it was not lost in the love of scientists and humanity. Scientists listened and tried to “respond” to it.

Not only was it highly frequent, 52 Blue’s migration route was also highly unusual. In 2004, researchers at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution published an article about 52 Blue in a journal called Deep Sea Research, stating: 52 Blue migrated continuously across the deep waters of the central and eastern North Pacific Basin . It was undertaking the widest migration of any whale species in the world.

For most other whale species, they typically migrate to the same area each year: migrating to tropical waters in the winter and to colder waters in the summer.

However, it was different for 52 Blue. Its route changed from year to year, and it didn’t spend much time in one place . Sometimes it would return along the same coastline it had just been. Another season, it would swim out into deeper waters.

Because of 52 Blue’s unpredictable and aimless nature, no scientist has ever found or seen it to this day. All that humans know about 52 Blue the whale is its high-pitched, mournful yet arrogant singing voice.

Looking at the tangled lines on the map created by 52 Blue, scientists can’t help but wonder: what exactly is 52 Blue searching for?

There are still many mysteries surrounding 52 Blue that scientists have yet to solve.

Despite the discovery of 52 Blue in 1992, scientists still haven’t fully understood this “legend of the blue sea” : “We can’t understand 52 Blue. Was this whale alone? People like to imagine a giant creature, year after year singing a solitary song that no one else can hear. But is 52 Blue really alone in the deep ocean? Or is 52 Blue not real, but just a ‘ghost’ of the ocean? It’s so ambiguous.”

This is easy to explain because, to date, no one has ever seen or searched for 52 Blue . In other words, no one has ever seen it with their own eyes. 52 Blue is not just the loneliest giant creature on the planet; its story is an allegory for loneliness.

One of the efforts to find 52 Blue came from Josh Zeman, a filmmaker who made a documentary called “52: The Search for the Loneliest Whale in the World” .

Among the themes that stand out in director Josh Zeman’s story is modern loneliness, and how people react to the story of 52 Blue the whale in the digital age, when the internet promises to connect millions online but can actually leave us more deeply isolated.

However, beyond its metaphorical representation of loneliness, 52 Blue also conveys a message of optimism: Nearly three decades after humans discovered its sound, 52 Blue continues to sing in the deep ocean. It tirelessly calls out to its kind and undertakes a unique journey in search of companions, hoping that one day nature will respond.

Even so, what humans understand about this colossal creature is still little. Is the label of “loneliness” that so many attach to 52 Blue true? Is it really true that 52 Blue is alone in the deep ocean? Or does 52 Blue even exist, or is it just a “ghost” of the sea? All these questions have been raised for over 30 years, and we can only continue to wait for the answers.
